I make contemplative sculptures that describe emotion in an abstracted way. Abstract because they do not directly reference the human body. Interactions of materials create understated references to feelings and emotions that are be hard to describe. My intent with this sculptural work is to slow the viewer down. To allow the viewer an experience of how the materials interact to create quiet, subtle emotion that are often common but downplayed, tucked aside, or held inside us.

Fragile materials are en massed to create an ethereal sculptural effect. Materials are used in specific ways to pull out their metaphorical strengths and weaknesses. Porcelain is used for its structural qualities and placed in precarious and vulnerable positions. It has relatable aspects to people in its strength and fragility. Imperfect edges and various textures and inconsistent thickness relate to the variability in human nature. Thread is massed but allowed to stay separated by individual holes in grids in the porcelain panels. Acting together they are greater than they would be individually on their own. Layered like thoughts and interactions. They are placed quickly and chaotically without much thought. They are often held by masking tape. Used for quickness and temporary ability to hold things tape pushes a feeling of impermanence and possibility of change. Other forms of attachment such as cables and clamps are meant to imply more fixed and permanent fasteners. Minimal materials and repetition make for a subtle and quiet composition allowing for more attention to how the materials interact and what they are doing.
